Dandelions And Disciples - 1 John 2:6-11

Have you ever heard or read a poor translation of a phrase from one language to another? If you have, you have seen that the meaning of the words can be totally lost; even be made to say something different than what they were intended to say. This week, we learn that this is exactly what has happened to some key Hebrew idioms found in the ‘New Testament.’ The meaning wasn’t necessarily lost in the translation as much as it has been forgotten through time and ...

Do You Realize What He Is Saying? - 1 John 2:1-5

Thanks for joining us! This week we enter the second chapter of 1 John. As we read Johnâs words, it is hard to separate the Torah from the message he is writing. In fact, I would even say that it is impossible. John tells his audience, âNow by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, âI know Him,â and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. (1John 2:3,4) Do you see what he just said? Because of how profound those words are, ...

Any Ignoramus' In The Room? - 1 John 1:1-10

Shalom! We are back on track, and ready to start getting into the book of 1 John. This week, we make our way through the first ten verses of chapter one.    The first epistle of John is full of âif, thenâ statements. John tells his audience in no uncertain terms that if you say such and such, and donât do such and such, then you are a liar. Because of this, we, as readers of his book should be absolutely sure of what ever it is that he is telling us. For instance, John wri ...

We Can Know That We Know - Intro to 1 John

Thank you for joining us on The Word Is Grace. This week, we begin a new study, on the book of 1 John.   John answers some very tough questions in this small letter. As we go through this profound book, I would like to encourage you to go deeper. Find out of John is saying what we believe he is saying. I will be providing links at the bottom of each weekâs podcast to be used for further study.  So, what does John write that is so profound? To begin with, he gives us the biblical ...

Pray, Pray, Pray. - James 5:13-20

Well, the Chanukah season is over, and so is our study on the book of James. Thank you for joining us each week, as we have looked at the words of James with "Torah perspective." I hope that you have gotten as much from this short book as I have.  This week, James finishes up his letter by prompting his readers to pray. Whether you are sick or healthy, pray for yourself and pray for each other. What an awesome God we serve, that He encourages each and every one of us t ...

No, We Haven't Forgoten About Sukkot!

Thanks for stopping by The Word Is Grace! I apologize for not getting around to posting a message about Sukkot sooner; it has been a busy (yet joyful) week.   We are right in the midst of the Festival of Sukkot, or the Feast of Tabernacles. During this joyous holiday, we are reminded of the fact that we are, as humans, temporary. The Word says that our lives are short, and Sukkot reminds that though our days are short, the same God who brought Israel out of Egypt with a mighty h ...

Going Against The Flow - Chanukah 2009

We interrupt this study on James to bring you a short message on Chanukah! As believers in Yeshua, Jesus, what is our proper response to this scripturally obscure holiday? What does it mean to us? Jim sums the message of Chanukah by asking, "will we be true to what we know is the Truth?"   The story of Chanukah, found in the book of 1 Maccabees (that's in the apocrypha - not scripture, and not to be regarded as scripture; but history.) is a call to each of us to follow ...

What's going to happen in 2012? - James 5:1-12

If you are like me, you've been asked about 2012 a lot lately. Unfortunately, with the media  frenzy concerning December 21, 2012, and the new movie, we are certain to be asked about it more and more leading up to that day. So what do we think is going to happen? To tell the truth, our guess is as good as the next person's. This week, as we go through James ch 5:1-12, we take a slight detour to mention 2012.   When Yeshua was asked in Matt 24 "What will be the sign of ...

I am a scumbag, Baruch Hashem! - James 4:11-17

Isn't God awesome? When I wake up in the morning, I can't help but think, "He is actually letting me do this again!" For some reason, our God - the God of Israel, still allows me to wake up each morning and continue to serve Him, regardless of how bad my past was. In spite of all of the terrible things that I did before I knew Him; and I am forever grateful. I was a scumbag before I came to Christ, yet He allowed me into His Kingdom; Bless His Name! He forgave my sins and b ...

When We're Broken Completely Down - James 4:1-10

This week, James (click here to read Jas 4:1-10) encourages us to go somewhere with him. In chapter four, verses seven through ten, James tells his audience to submit to God. he tells us that if we will simply draw near to God, He will draw near to us - then he gives us instructions on how to do it. Check out what James tells us next: "Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your ...

A Different Kind Of Wisdom Altogether - James 3:11-18

Toward the end of James 3 (Jas 3:11-18) "Who is wise and understanding among you?" If that question was posed to your congregation today, who would come to your mind? James had a specific type of people that he was referring to when he used the words "wise and understanding." James, being a Torah observant Jew would only equate the idea of true wisdom with Torah understanding and observance. James was in essence asking, "Who among you knows Torah, and i ...

Sometimes We Need A Spark Arrestor For Our Mouths - James 3:1-10

Welcome back to The Word Is Grace.  We have gone through a lot this last two weeks. My main hard drive took a dive, and we had a death in the family, so I have been late in posting. This week, we pick up where we left off, starting in James chapter three.  James makes it clear that we should not rush to become teachers, because there is a more strict judgment for them. In James' day, there were many people who were trying to gain social prominence by becoming leaders in the Messia ...

Faith Is A Verb - James 2:14-26

Welcome back! Thanks for joining us at The Word Is Grace. This week, we are back in the book of James, chapter 2:14-26.Most of us are aware of the supposed conflict between the book of James and the writings of Paul, namely Galatians. Paul tells us in Gal 2:16 that we are justified by faith in Messiah and not the works of the Law. James asks in James 2:21, "was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?"What do we do with this? It seems t ...

James Tells Us To Obey The Torah - James 2:1-13

This week, as we go through James 2:1-13 we learn that not only is James telling his readers to obey Torah, but he calls it the "Law of Liberty," or Freedom. Haven't we been taught in the past though that the Law was bondage? Didn't Paul say that we were "no longer under the Law?" How can James equate the Law with freedom?  The answer is simple; because that is exactly what it is - instructions for true freedom. First Century Jewish thought was that obedience to the ...

They're Gonna Hate You - James 1:17-27

When we first become believers in Yeshua, it is easy to be think that the whole world wants to hear the message that saved us. Most of us are a little taken back when we are not received with joyful words of encouragement, and completely startled when our audience rejects our message.  Today, we see the church as a whole taking steps to "remedy" this issue. The "remedy" for the negative response to the message of the Gospel, unfortunately, has been to water d ...

Abba, Father - Ch 4:1-10

Paul tells us in Galatians 4:6 that God has "sent forth the Spirit in your hearts, crying Abba Father." We are to have an intimate relationship with our Father in heaven, even to the point of calling Him Abba. If you are unfamiliar with this word, it is the word that small Hebrew speaking children call their fathers - similar to an American child calling his or her father "daddy".  We see Yeshua in the garden of Gethsemane crying out, "Abba Father, take t ...

It is Easier to 'Shoot the Messenger' Gal 4:11-32

Have you ever been confronted with something that hurt you, made you angry, and rattled you to your core... because it was true? So have I. Most of us have. Paul suffered a lot for sharing the Truth with the Gentiles. In Galatians 4:16 he asks, "Have I become your enemy because I tell you the truth?" Paul's heart was that no one would walk this walk in vein. He loved the people that he wrote to far too much to give them anything less than the truth - and sometimes it hurt. T ...

Nip It In The Bud! Ch 5:1-15

In this week's teaching, chapter 5:1-15, Paul sees that there is danger brewing in the walk of the Galatians. Someone that Paul never calls by name, is trying to lead them in to another gospel;  that of becoming a proselyte. They were being told that they must become Jews in order to receive salvation. The NIV says that they have been "cut in on". The gospel that they were being presented was not from God, and like we said last week, Paul loves them enough to warn them ...

You're In, Now Act Like It. - Gal 5:16-24

How is your walk? Better yet, what defines your walk? Paul tells the Galatians to "walk in the Spirit..." which unfortunately has been used as a call to disregard Torah. The common teaching goes something like this, "walk in the Spirit - not the works of the Law!"   So what was Paul talking about when he said to walk in the Spirit? We do not believe that Paul was telling the Galatians to walk in the Spirit instead of anything. Think about it; Paul uses the T ...

Our Choices Have Consequences Gal 5:25-6:18

This week Tim as finishes up the book of Galatians we are reminded by Paul (Gal 6:8) that "...he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life." Paul is encouraging the Galatians to make wise decisions; after all we will all reap what we have sown. It is easy to see Paul's heart as he finishes this letter - he is urging them [and us!] to "stay the course." Paul wants everybody in his ...
