The Daily Matt No.74

Today's episode we take a quick look at some of the adjusters on the metal bodied planes. During an earlier episode I tried to explain the parts of a plane, but there was one little adjuster I completely overlooked. So while I go back to discuss this little adjuster that does a lot I thought we could talk about the entire adjusting process, using both the mechanical adjusters and a good old fashion plane hammer. 410 Kreg Pocket Hole Jigs

Today's Try it Tuesday is the Kreg Pocket Hole Jig. I've been using pocket holes on and off in my own shop for a wide assortment of projects. They're quick and easy to use and they create a strong joint that works amazing! Some will argue that because they're not a "traditional" joinery technique they don't work as well as other wood joinery, but I've never had a problem yet and don't ever expect too. The Daily Matt No.73

Today's episode is a chance to get caught up on some comments and questions that have come in and also to point you in the direction of resources to answer those questions. Many of you have asked when we'll be covering plane restoration. It's in the pipeline, just further down the line though. So until then, checkout Eric Wolf's The Ramblings of a Crazy Man. Eric did a great job of documenting his refurbishing a Stanley plane and I think you'll learn a ton from it. Another great resource ...

409 Hendrik's February Visit "How Do I Learn Woodworking"

Hendrik is back this month and our topic of discussion is "How Do I Learn Woodworking". Just like there are so many different aspects of woodworking there's more than one way to learn woodworking. Whether it's taking a class or simply playing around in the shop, learning woodworking is a personal journey that starts with one person deciding they want to try something new. But some of the questions we wrestle with include "what do I need to learn?", "where do I learn?" and "why do I need ...

The Daily Matt No.72

Today's episode we're continuing on our discussion of why buy premium planes? This is the second part of the premium vs non-premium planes and what their typical characteristics are. Our focus is on smoothing planes, as they're the planes that it's most crucial to have working better than any other. Flat soles, working parts and comfy handles...the main features that are most important to the user. Please excuse the camera work, I'm training a new cameraman - my 8 year-old son Aiden LOL ...

The Daily Matt No.71

One of the most common questions I get regularly is "Why buy a high end plane like those from Lee Valley or Lie-Nielsen?" "Is there a real difference?" "Can't an inexpensive plane do the same thing?" After having some experience with Premium planes and some not so premium ones, I'm starting to understand what works and what doesn't and I'll share with you a few of my thoughts. Please excuse the camera work, I'm training a new cameraman - my 8 year-old son Aiden LOL!! ...

408 The Milescraft Trim45

As part of my "Try it Tuesday" I wanted to share with you the Milescraft Trim45. While it might not be considered by many to be a "woodworking" tool that you'd use frequently in the woodshop. Given the fact the majority of us get our start doing projects around the house such as replacing mouldings and casework, I can't help but think this is a tool we all could benefit from when those projects arise. The Daily Matt No.68

Returning to our discussion of the hand planes from last week, today let's learn about the parts of a hand plane. Being able to identify and properly name the individual components of a hand plane makes it so much easier to understand what authors are talking about when describing planes and if you were in need of a spare part or two...you can accurately name the part and get exactly what you need. 406 Maple Child's Dresser Pt.2

Today's episode is part 2 of the child's dresser build project. We spend some time milling up the stock for the legs, jointing and thickness planing. While the majority of this task was completed with my power tools, part of my hybrid woodworker work habits, there is the occassional component that can only be handled with hand tools. Taking a little detour from our the scheduled topic today to make sure you have a chance to checkout a few things. First thing I want to mention is Tom Fidgen's new website www.theunpluggedwoodshop.com. Heading into the holidays I had mentioned receiving my copy of his new book "Made By Hand - Furniture projects from the Unplugged Woodshop" and how much of a fan of his blog I was. Since then, Tom has a new and very interactive site up, complete with galleries and downloadable plans for t ...

405 Maple Child's Dresser Pt 1

Today we start a new build project. Another child's dresser, but rather than being like Aiden's dresser from the first year of the show. This one is made of maple and is designed to be shorter and wider (much like the host of the show!). I've tried to incorporate as many handtools into the build, but when I started this project I had just received my new Steel City Bandsaw from Highland Woodworking's special offer and I really wanted to see what I could do with it. Hope you enjoy this f ...
